Kimberly Becker of Labyrinth Consultants, Inc. is from Ft. Myers, Florida and she had asked me how she and her coworkers could bring “Be Kind to Humankind Week” into their area to help with the many wonderful things that their organization does to help others. This year they would specifically like to help collect food and other needed goods for the folks at Community Cooperative Ministries Incorporated (CCMI).

CCMI is the umbrella agency that serves multiple organizations in downtown Fort Myers, including The Soup Kitchen, Meals on Wheels and Faith in Action. Labyrinth Consultants will have a number of locations to drop off items during the week. Canned goods, non-perishable foods, toiletries, and monetary donations are all accepted.

Todd has not only succeeded at many physical goals and challenges, but I have personally found him to be a very kind hearted individual, who becomes genuinely interested and concerned for others when they are down-in-the-dumps or depressed. Yes Coach Lou, you are correct to say that helping others is important, however in my opinion helping others is life’s greatest achievement!

Below is the story of Todd Lewis and how listening to speaker Lou Holtz at a seminar changed his life forever! Thank you Todd for sharing your story!

I came across your website while reading Bits & Pieces. I wanted to forward a bit about myself as well as thank you for the inspiration.

Nine years ago I was in a sales job and spinning my wheels. I flew to Dallas, TX for a company sales conference. To be honest with you I really didn’t want to be there. One night at dinner they brought out a speaker who talked about a positive attitude and making a list of goals. Even though I didn’t meet the speaker, he changed my life. Shortly after that night I made my own list and started learning to unlearn a few things and focused on being positive. One of the goals on my list was to meet this man in person and say “thank you”. My dream came true last month. I met Coach Lou Holtz. He even called my Mother and left her a message at home since she couldn’t travel with me. If it weren’t for his message I would have never done the following:

- The running of the bulls in Pamplona
- Climbing Kilimanjaro
- 40 Marathons before I turned 40
- Took my Mother to Ireland
- Hiked to the Base Camp of Everest

My husband and I have been trying something new for a couple of years now. On our birthdays, we make a point to do something for someone else. We have tried to break the tradition of celebrating this day as our own. Instead we try to recognize the world around us and give back as a celebration of life. There are little things we do from making a small donation to the causes we believe in to being extra nice to strangers on the street this day. As new parents to be we will be starting this tradition in our new family and wanted to pass it on to others that may also agree its a good idea.

The American Red Cross is in crucial need of blood. By giving one pint of blood you literally save many lives. I recently gave blood, and am now signing up to be a regular donor. I have Universal Blood, which is RH-Negative blood. It is in very high demand as we can give our blood to everyone, yet we must receive only our type of blood should we ever need it.

Regardless of whether or not you are RH-Negative or any other blood type, The American Red Cross in your area would greatly appreciate your donation. In giving blood we help others. So simple, yet so very important! Also, did you know that 1 pint of blood equals loosing 1 pound? When the nurse told me that, I asked her if she could take out 9 more pints! They laughed and told me there is actually 1 pint of blood per every 10 lbs. of body weight per person. Interesting.
